ZIV Signs the Largest Contract in its History to Digitize the Greek Electricity Network
ZIV secures a major project in Greece for the supply of smart meters to HEDNO, one of the ten largest electricity distribution companies in Europe and the sole DSO in Greece. The contract, awarded to the consortium formed by ZIV and Itron, covers nearly one million devices and the associated systems for data collection and management. It will run for an initial three-year period, with the option to extend for a further five years. The project, which is part of HEDNO’s grid modernization and digitalization strategy, marks the launch of its long-term plan to support the energy transition.
ZIV’s status as a European manufacturer with its own R&D and long-standing expertise in smart grids was decisive in winning this contract. Borja Negro, CEO of ZIV, said: “This award is a recognition of the high degree of innovation built into our products. It is the result of the efforts of a global, multidisciplinary team, enabling us to remain at the technological forefront and to contribute to the energy transition needed to secure a sustainable and reliable electricity supply.”
The terms of the tender have required significant European industrial content. Smart meters are currently a key element in the digitalization of the electricity system and in improving the services utilities provide to their customers. As critical assets, they demand special attention to cybersecurity, both to protect the grid and to safeguard user data.
ZIV’s position as a European manufacturer with in-house R&D and extensive experience in smart grids was decisive in this project. As Borja Negro, CEO of ZIV, stated: “This award recognizes the high level of innovation built into our products, the result of the efforts of a global, multidisciplinary team. It allows us to remain at the technological forefront and contribute to the energy transition needed to ensure a sustainable and secure electricity supply.”
This long-term contract is the largest ever signed by ZIV in terms of volume. It will have a positive impact on employment in the Basque Country, both at ZIV and across its network of local suppliers. ZIV is also an important supplier of other smart grid solutions, mainly protection, control and communication systems for primary and secondary substations. Thanks to its strong positioning in this fast-growing market segment, ZIV has secured contracts in more than 50 countries over the past 12 months and has become a reference technology provider for renewables in Spain.
